Free and Confidential Pregnancy Services

Telling your parents you’re pregnant can feel like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, but you are not alone! We know it’s scary, but it won’t be like this forever.

Process the News Yourself

Try your best to process the news yourself before talking to your parents. Give yourself permission to feel the emotions coming at you. It’s essential not to push them away but embrace them.

Confide with a trusted friend if you need to before breaking the news to your parents. It may be scary at first, but it will help to clear your head and get it off your chest.

1. Pick a Convenient Time

Timing is everything. Think of a convenient time for your parents to share the news. Share the news with both parents at once, if possible, so you don’t have to go through all the emotions twice.

2. Try to Stay Calm

Do your best to remain as calm as you can. If your parents’ reaction is overwhelming, remember to stay engaged and present if you can. Be slow to respond and give them space to process just like you gave yourself.

It’s important to note that if you ever feel unsafe in this setting, leaving is totally ok. If you suspect the news won’t go well before – take someone you trust along with you or even do it over the phone.

3. It’s Ultimately Your Decision

Though you may respect your parents and their input – what you do next with your pregnancy is ultimately your decision. Parents can often put pressure because it’s their way of feeling like they’re in control.
